New Members: WJW NEWS- Kristy Griffith-Bergan. Motion to accept new Member: Terry Trakas. Second: Terry Mullally. Members Not Here Any More: No Members left the Union this month. Two letters of support came in from our Congressional representatives, Steve LaTourette and Dennis Kucinich in support of our Sisters and Brothers at WKYC. These letters on our behalf are sincerely appreciated. WOIO/WUAB- Bill Kohagen read a note of appreciation from Alina Russell and her husband Larry for the Target gift card sent for the birth of their son, Max. Max arrived on January 24th, weighing in at 7lbs 10oz. Bill seemed certain that Max would have that special “glow” from his Chernobyl heritage. Best wishes to the Russell family! Stewards Reports: WKYC- Cathy Watkins updates the E-Board on the recent events that have taken place at their station. Letters asking for support were sent to all the area Congressional Representatives. As of February 20th, 2010, Steve LaTourette and Dennis Kucinich have responded with letters to the NLRB on our behalf. The Union is seeking injunctive relief from the company’s recent actions. Lou Fallot has given an affidavit in addition to the one filed by President Wachenschwanz. Chuck DeGross will be filing a brief. The company asked to come back to mediation; the Union was willing to do so, if the company would present their proposals in advance. No progress was made. Three articles about the plight of our Brothers and Sisters at WKYC have been in the news; one in Scene Magazine, a mention in Crane’s Cleveland Business and a blog on the Cleveland Leader. The AFL-CIO adopted a resolution in support of WKYC Unit Members which will be sent to other Unions and their Membership. Jobs With Justice has also given their support. The Negotiating Committee had informally met with Brooke to ask that Members salaries not be cut, but that plea was not acted on by the company. WOIO/WUAB: Bill Kohagen reports that nine grievances have been recently filed. The issue of Danielle Serino shooting video was resolved in favor of the Union. The Union has asked for a letter stating that the company was at fault. There was also a grievance regarding Mike Schaler’s pay reduction. While Mike had accepted the bump to a different position, he continued doing his “original” job which was theoretically, eliminated. In April there will be another hearing on his lay-off. While researching the pay issue involving Mike, Rob Hillyer discovered that two Production Assistants had been underpaid for the past two years. The company was alerted to this error and a check for back pay will be given to each of the Production Assistants in question. A discussion was held with the News Director regarding the issue of the remote camera video coming in thru the weather graphics system and controlled by weather people. The meeting was to note our concern about this issue. A grievance was filed regarding part-time Production Assistants being called in on their “off” days and being paid at straight time. The CBA states that if you are called in you get four hrs of O.T. The Union will be asking for an extension on the grievance involving the use of Skype cams. The grievance of a jurisdictional nature surrounding use of local programming has been withdrawn by the Union. Day two of Arbitration on the video sharing issue will be held on March 9th. A memo was received from the News Director that states all O.T. must be directly approved by the News Director. The Union noted that recently the company has had Executive producers filling in for Unit Members that were out ill, without attempting to contact Unit Members to fill in. WJW-News- Brian Geiger states that a News Unit meeting was held and about half of the Unit showed up for the meeting. A Negotiating Committee was selected at the meeting and they are gathering information. The Committee Members are: Kyo Cumming, Brian Geiger, Doug Yandala and Lynne Zele. Alternates are Leah Richards and Maria Scali Eder. Web jurisdiction looks like it is going to be one of the issues discussed in negotiations. WJW-Engineering- Tim Roskey reviews a grievance that has been filed about Skype video. A penalty of one hour’s pay will be requested for each Unit Member to be made whole; the company has not yet responded. There is an outstanding grievance on VR’s and the “Re-Hire vs. New Hire” issue. Next week, there are phone conversations scheduled with management to discuss this issue. AFL/CIO-JWJ-NCC-SEC Reports: Bill Wachenschwanz gives the E-Board a history of Jobs With Justice and recaps how helpful and supportive this group has been to Local 42. Bill asks for our Members to please consider volunteering to help JWJ with their spring fundraiser which will be held on May 17th. Help is needed now to populate their phone bank in their fund raising efforts. Any amount of time would be appreciated. Please call 440-333-6363 and ask to be connected with Debbie Klein/ Jobs With Justice. Bill discusses the Equity Committee and asks Danielle Banks and Heather Flowers to meet with Secretary, Nancy Tatulinski to formulate plans for the Committee and get the ball rolling. Old Business: John Clark, NABET Sector President, has retired. Secretary Tatulinski has purchased a card to be presented on behalf of the Local. Bill called around and found that John likes Scotch Whisky and asks the E-Board if he would be permitted to purchase a bottle for John to give with the card. The Board unanimously agrees. New Business: Jim Joyce is now NABET/CWA President and Charles Braico is Vice President. Jim and Charles will hold these offices until the CWA Convention in July, 2010. At that time, an election will be held at Convention to determine the full term Officers of NABET. Bill advises the E-board that he will probably need to go to the Convention due to the election. Bill poses a request to the E-board; Based on the good support we have been given from Steve LaTourette and Dennis Kucinich, can we return our support to these Congressmen and endorse them in their bid for re-election? Move to offer our endorsement: The entire Executive Board. Second: The entire Executive Board. Terry Trakas suggests we make up a resolution of support for the Congressmen, print it on parchment and have it framed. Discussion follows and agreement is reached. Move to spend less than $150 to have two resolution parchments made and framed: move: Terry Trakas. Second: Danielle Banks. Terry Trakas discusses that the By-Laws Committee met and will be looking at the Ohio Revised Code on Absentee Ballots to gain insight into the process for changes to our practices. Terry said he will create a PDF File for the Committee to review and, ultimately, present at the General Membership Meeting. Danielle Banks asks that Chuck DeGross be contacted about Living Wills’ and that Marilyn Oliver be asked about programs for Members who had been laid-off. John Potter reminds everyone to please up-date him on any changes to your e-mail address. He also suggests starting up a Local 42 Facebook page. The E-Board thinks that might be a good idea, Motion to Adjourn: Terry Mullally. Second: Bill Kohagen. Meeting ends at 2:53pm. NEXT E-BOARD MEETING: Saturday, March 20th, 2010 at 11:00am at the Union Hall. |
