NABET-CWA/WKYC-TV NEGOTIATIONS BULLETIN #4

August 7, 2009

The Race to the Bottom Continues!

The reopener negotiations between the Union and WKYC-TV continued on August 6 and August 7, 2009 in the station’s second floor conference room. On August 6, the Company gave the Union’s Negotiating Committee its “final” offer.  This package contained regressive proposals on wage reduction and severance pay.(read more)

The Union learned for the first time that the Company’s wage reduction proposal was RETROACTIVE to June 1, 2009. The Company’s new severance proposal switched from a fixed dollar amount to the same policy that would be in effect for non-represented employees in the event of a layoff.  (WHATEVER THAT WOULD BE)On August 7, the Union countered with several proposals which even introduced a wage reduction effective upon ratification. The Company quickly responded by saying “that their final offer stood and was up to NABET to either accept or reject.” The Union also learned for the first time that the serious economic proposals brought forward by the Company were at the behest of LOCAL MANAGEMENT NOT GANNETT CORPORATE. The session ended by the Union informing the Company that it would hold a membership meeting on Saturday August 29th. 1 The Committee also informed the Company that it was not recommending their package to the membership.  The Company’s response was: “We didn’t ask for your recommendation”.

The membership meeting on Saturday August 29, 2009 will be held at the Union Hall from 10 AM until 2 PM. Your entire Negotiating Committee and NABET/CWA Staff Representative Lou Fallot, will be on hand to explain the entire Company offer and answer all questions. You are encouraged to make every effort to make this meeting and once   again, you are reminded to ignore any rumors or Company rhetoric regarding these negotiations; and that all official information will come from your Negotiating Committee. In solidarity, Your Negotiating Committee
