NABET/CWA LOCAL 42 Equity Committee Meeting Minutes for July 16, 2005

Equity Committee Meeting Minutes
Saturday, July 16, 2005

Meeting Begins: 12:30 PM
Attendees: Heather Flowers, Mary Gladen, Maurice Sears, and Nancy Tatulinski.
Meeting called to order by Gladen; Tatulinski reads the Minutes of the last Equity Committee Meeting.
Discussion begins with the CWA District 4 and District 6 Civil Rights and Equity Conference. “Equity Rocks Convention” was held in Cleveland at the Sheraton City Center on June 24-26th. As a unit in the host city, the NABET Local 42 Equity Committee was asked to provide a local color guard for the ceremonies. Gladen and Sears attended the conference where guest speakers included Mayor Jane Campbell and Congressman Dennis Kucinich. The Mayor spoke about challenges being a female in public office while Congressman Kucinich focused on the topic of Social Security. Gladen and Sears concluded that, while the conference was informative, it tended to lean towards being a political rally.
The NABET National Convention will take place in Chicago from August 24 thru the 26th. Mary Gladen and Rick Steine will be among the attendees. Maurice Sears will be the local representative at the Minority Caucus in Chicago, August 24th thru the 30th. Heather Flowers suggests that the Equity Committee explore ways, on a grass roots level, to address important issues on the minds of our Local 42 membership. Concerns such as civil rights filings, contract negotiations and documentation were mentioned. The need to find a way to best train our Stewards was agreed, by all, to be of primary importance. Maurice Sears suggests The George Meany Institute as a valuable resource for these questions. Sears clarifies that we need to win our disputes at the first stage, the Steward level, for maximum effectiveness. Tatulinski agrees and suggests that Steward training be the primary focus of the Equity Committee for the near future. Gladen said she would contact The Meany Institute to gather information about classes available, cost, and possible guest speakers. Discussion follows that an addition to the by-laws of the local may be helpful in the continued training of our Stewards. Further discussion to take place prior to the General Membership meeting on September 17th, 2005.
Mary distributes this months Equity Committee posting, “ CWA Newsletter on Social Security.”
Next Meeting: Saturday, September 10th, at NOON at the Union Hall.
Meeting Concludes: 1:14 PM
